MULTIHULL RACING If you are a multihull sailor and are interested in coming down and getting on a boat, you can now book yourself as crew using our new online booking system at: http://ubccatbooking.appspot.com/ If you are an experienced multihull sailor (20 logged days on Hobies/Nacras and passed Advanced II) and are interested in racing and gaining access to our Nacra F18 with spinnaker or Infusions, send multihullracing@ubcsailing.org an email and Kaspar will pair you with a skipper to qualify.   MONOHULL RACING Monohull racing is intended to be low-key and fun. Meet beside the Vanguards at 5:30 PM on Tuesdays to rig up. You will be paired with a sailing partner (or you can bring your own). The first start is at 6:15 PM and races continue until the wind quits. The club has suspended classes on Tuesdays, meaning all seven Vanguard 15's and five Lasers are available for racing. Please email Kevin at monohull-racing@ubcsailing.org if you have any further questions. *** PRIVATE LESSONS AVAILABLE NOW   So your lessons are done and you feel like you could still use some improvement - did you know you can book a private lesson with any instructor? UBC SAILING CLUB - TSUNAMI NEWS July 15, 2010 *** UBC KEATS 2010: SIGN UP NOW!     - Registration only available until JULY 18 UBC Sailing Club members are invited to brave the dogfish and rough seas to participate in this year's Keats Island August long weekend trip (July 31st to Aug 2nd, 2010). This is an intense three-day sailing adventure trip from Jericho Beach to Keats Island. It will take approximately 6+ hours each way in our beloved UBC sailboats. The cost is $100 per person, and food is included. The maximum trip capacity this year is 36 people. For safety reasons applicants are selected based on sailing proficiency and experience. Sign-up closes Sunday, July 18th at midnight PST. This gives us time to organize a viable fleet and book appropriate transportation. Don't miss out! Sign up today! Case in point: recently a UBC sailor took a Jericho member's personal Laser dolly (clearly marked with her name) from the beach to store a UBC FJ. The dolly could have been damaged by the heavy FJ, but worse, while the Laser sailor frantically searched for her dolly, her $6000 boat drifted away, and very nearly lost a $600 daggerboard. You will be held liable for damage to other JSCA members' personal equipment. Please email Kevin at monohull-racing@ubcsailing.org if you have any further questions. *** UBC SAILING CLUB - STORAGE CHANGES! UBC Sailing has re-built the FJ sail storage area in the club room. A most casual bystander may not realize that the intent of the new system is to pass the loop through either the clew or tack rings of the main sail itself and clip it to the brass clip, then cinch the drawcord on the sail bag around the attachment point before hauling the sails up. This lets the sail hang straight, which is better for the sailcloth and allows water to drain out from the wrapped sail. If sails are hung by the drawcord on the sail bag, they end up kinked and half lying on the floor, which is less ideal. Also, Anton reiterates his frequent pleas to spend the extra few seconds when derigging to find the sailbag with the same number as the sails being put away. It will save the tireless dinghy exec and volunteers hours of searching when a problem is reported about a specific sail number. In addition, some Vanguard sailors cleverly stuff the sail bag inside the foil bag when rigging, so both can be found in one go. TV Heart Attack and DJ Brad Winter had the crowd dancing all night. The band members expressed their delight at playing for UBC Sailing: club members and guests created an amazing vibe. On behalf of the Social Team and the UBC Sailing Executive, we appreciate the efforts of all the volunteers that made the event possible.   Special Acknowledgements: Nadine Stunzi: Nadine coordinated approximately 80 volunteers, managed shift changes, and even stayed to clean up! Jessica Salomon: Stepped up as team lead for door and ticket sales for the entire evening. Brian Fernandes: Returned from last season to be team lead at the bar from start to finish. Play of the Night! Vice-Commodore Andrew Porritt took the stage for a heartfelt speech sure to remembered by all those who were fortunate enough to witness it. Rigging Reminder: Foil bags have internal pockets! A quick note to all Laser/ Vanguard sailors: We lost a couple of rudders recently because the spring clips supposedly preventing them from falling off were bent out of shape and failed to do their job. The clips will be replaced in the next order of boat parts, but as an additional safety measure hitch pins have been put through the pintles on these boats. Please try not to lose these pins. For the Lasers, the hitch pins will stay on the pintles, which are on the rudder heads (on the Vanguard, the pintle is on the hull.)  This means it is even more IMPORTANT! than ever to use the internal pockets in the foil bags to separate the rudders from the daggerboards (there's one for the tiller, too).  Otherwise the pointy ends of the hitch pins may scratch and damage the daggerboards. UBC Sailing would like to remind all members to put your safety first when going out on the water. Here are ten things to consider before going out: 1. Equipment is more likely to break in high winds. How would you get back to shore if something on your boat broke? 2. Forces on your boat increase with the SQUARE of the wind speed. This means that 20 knot winds are already already 1.75 times stronger than 15 knot winds while 30 knot winds are a massive four times stronger than 15 knot winds. Can you and your boat handle these forces? 3 The waves can be very big (4-6 feet) in westerly winds while easterly winds are gusty and variable. Can you anticipate the wind shifts and wave action well enough to keep the boat upright in the wind gusts? 4. You are responsible for paying for damage and lost parts that occur due to your own negligence. Sailing in conditions that exceed your abilities is considered negligent. Moreover, when a boat is out of commission due to repairs, this greatly affects your fellow club members and creates a large amount of work for the many volunteers that keep this club running. 5. Less people are on the water when the wind is strong. Will anyone know you are in trouble if something happens? 6. Do you have the physical endurance to hike out and keep the boat upright or to right it repeatedly to get back to Jericho? 7. The normal procedure for righting a capsized boat won't work in high winds. Do you know how to do a scoop recovery? Have you practiced it in lighter winds? 8. Sailing speeds are higher when the wind is strong, making injuries more likely. (This is particularly true for RS500s, Hobie 16s, Nacra's and 29ers.) What would you do if you or your crew were physically injured on the water? 9. Are you prepared to spend extended periods of time immersed in the water? You and your crew should be wearing a wetsuit regardless of how warm a day it is. 10. Dinghies generally aren't built to handle winds over 25 knots. Most expert sailors will stay on the beach or go windsurfing when the wind is that strong. Why not follow their example? Further to these questions, it is every member's responsibility to know and observe the rules on or near the water. Here are some reminders courtesy of Mike Cotter of JSCA: 1. Always wear your P.F.D. and whistle on the water. Not only is it the law, but it could save your life! 2. Sail-powered craft have the right of way over power craft, paddle and rowing powered craft. 3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of commercial vessels. 4. It's illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a tug and its tow. 5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard tack vessel. 6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel. 7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead. 8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear. 9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel on a tack. 10. The area south of the orange can buoys is for training or transiting only. 11. Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is prohibited. 12. It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the bottom of launching ramps. 13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as fishers cast lines as far as possible. 14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving. 15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended periods of time.
