Hey all!

The new sails are finally absolutely definitely here, and I have seen them with mine own eyes. Also, it looks like a nice day for a sail, to go "baptize" them. So if anyone wants to come out and help put stickers on sails for a bit, and then see how a Vanguard sails, with new shiny crinkly sails, I'll probably be heading to the club in about an hour (i.e. around 1500). Hey all,

So we have five new sails being shipped up to us for the Vanguard fleet. They reached Richmond at 6am this morning, and UPS estimates they'll deliver them to Jericho today. I'll believe it when I see it, of course, but if they *do* arrive today, it would be nice to number them right away so we could use them for racing tomorrow. So if anyone's thinking of coming out racing and wants a couple of work hours for showing up early (maybe around 4-ish?), let me know and I'll confirm whether the sails are actually here, later today...

Monohull_Repair Stupid Vanguard tricks, anyone?

Heya!

So some of you may be familiar with one of the less welcome "features" of the Vanguard 15: if you turtle it, and it sits upside down for 5, 10 minutes or so, the mast fills with water. Then, when you right it, all that weight so high up means it has mad rotational inertia, and tends to death-roll right back over again. Then once you've done this a dozen times and you're all tired, Jericho Rescue comes out to get you. This is annoying.

So, we've been thinking about possible fixes, which we'd have to prototype and test. This would involve picking a nice warm sunny day, heading down to the club, taking a mast off a boat, removing the bottom of it, shoving a bunch of pool noodles into the mast, re-assembling it, going for a nice long sail, then, just before returning, repeatedly capsizing and turtling it for various lengths of time to see what happens :) Tomorrow's forecast to be a nice sunny day...

If that sounds like an appealing way to spend a summer Sunday, well, you should probably get professional help. But barring that, let me know, eh?

Monohull_Repair Next work party!

Hey all,

Giving an actual week's notice for once! Our next regularly scheduled work party is next Thursday, July 8th, starting at 18:30.

However, there's a lot of comments about the FJ fleet up on the board, and those all get taken out at 18:00 for lessons. So if a couple of volunteers wanted to show up earlier (say, around 16:00) and get a couple extra hours of work on that fleet, that's a possibility---let me know.

Tasks for the regular work party, pending any changes:

* Fishing through and installing some more Vanguard grab rail backing plates (fun tiems!)
* Shovelling/ hosing some sand and mud out from the boat storage and sail-rolling areas (yay!)
* Relabelling all the dollies (If we have enough hands to lift boats from one to another easily)
* Fixing anything else that breaks between now and then...
* Other stuff I'm sure I've forgotten but will occur to me before next week.

More fun tasks that could be attempted, if there's interest and hands:

* Building upright sail storage for the Vanguard sails (this would require a volunteer with a car to pick up a stack of 1x4s and some hooks for bungees)
* Repairing/ rebuilding a very very chewed up Laser daggerboard, which I think *is* fixable and can then serve as a spare.

Monohull_Repair New boats!

Well, this may the lastest-minute of the last-minute announcements, but nailing down sailing boat suppliers with exact delivery estimates is notoriously impossible... We're getting an FJ and a Laser delivered at 2pm (i.e. in 3 hours!) If anyone happens to feel like taking the afternoon off to help unload, rig and commission those, it shouldn't take very long at all, and it would be nice to have them ready to sail before the weekend...

Monohull_Repair Fiberglassing time!

Hey all,

I've finally finished grinding out as much of Vanguard 21's daggerboard trunk as I'm going to. So I'm thinking today of running some errands out to Glenmore Sailboats and then to West Marine, and then heading to the club to lay up some fiberglass. If anyone's interested in watching/learning/helping, an extra pair of hands is never amiss...

As I'll likely be out erranding most of the afternoon, though, call me at 778-837-6834 if interested, and we'll set a more exact time...

Monohull_Repair FJ fleet work

Hey all,

I now have hog ring pliers and more hog rings than I can shake a stick at. These will be used to crimp new bungees onto the FJ fleet. Unfortunately, the FJ fleet is used for lessons, pretty much all the time (except tomorrow evening, but I can't make it out tomorrow evening...) So we'll have to run a special FJ work party during a week-day (or just start early at the next Thursday work party...)

Monohull_Repair Reminder: Work party Thursday 1830

Just a quick reminder that we'll be running the first of our monthly regular work parties on Thursday (and the second Thursday of the month for the rest of the season). We'll start around 1830 and probably work for 2-3 hours.

I'd like to tackle the grab rails on the Vanguards this week, which involves using 3M 5200, which is messy, messy stuff. (Or maybe I'm just a messy, messy worker?) So if you have painting clothes you don't mind getting permanent white blobs on, wear those. We have a couple of coveralls at the club, but probably not enough to go around...

There's also some continuing work on renumbering the Laser fleet, and I'm sure we'll find a number of other maintenance and cleaning jobs if there's a big crowd.

Monohull_Repair Last bit of rigging, anyone?

Would there be three or four volunteers wanting to meet at 9am for maybe two hours of work? We *finally* received the boom for the RS500, and that hull is now ready to use, so we'd just need to flip it over and step the mast. We can also flip and mast one more Vanguard. Then there's a bunch of organising and sorting, and early-ish Saturday morning would actually be a convenient time for that, because we can take all the sails outside and sort and organise to our hearts content, and then lessons will take all the fleets from us around 10, 10:30-ish, so we save ourselves the work of putting everything back in the club room. Sneaky, eh?

Monohull_Repair Work party tomorrow (Thursday) evening

I'm going to head down to the club again tomorrow evening around 6:30. There's a bit more foil sanding to do, and maybe some gelcoating. Also, we've got some new parts that can be organised and put into service so the boats are ready for the first set of lessons this weekend.

Monohull_Repair Three more sessions, and we should be done!

I figure a final push of three work sessions should get all the foils and hulls ready for the lessons, which start next weekend... I'll head down to the club later this afternoon (short notice, I know...)

Then I'll do something either Monday or Tuesday next week, and finish off next Thursday afternoon. Probably around 6 or 6:30, but that's flexible if you want to help out and have a different availability...

In addition to the epoxy work, we're expecting some deliveries of new parts, so if we have a few volunteers next week we can work on labelling those and putting them into service.

Let me know if you can make any of those times, eh?
