DINGHY FLEET NEWS

Beginner Sailing Lessons: New Session Added!

Are you interested in taking a Beginner Lesson in June?
A new session has been opened, running Friday evenings
starting May 28th. You can register for the class during
office hours at Jericho.

Proficiency Exams

The proficiency exam schedule is now online at
http://register.ubcsailing.org/lessons/schedule. If you will
be taking a proficiency exam this summer, please contact
Anton or Sarah (sailing-lessons@ubcsailing.org) to register
in one of the available sessions.

Rigging Reminder: Foil bags have internal pockets!

A quick note to all Laser/ Vanguard sailors: We lost a
couple of rudders recently because the spring clips
supposedly preventing them from falling off were bent out of
shape and failed to do their job. The clips will be replaced
in the next order of boat parts, but as an additional safety
measure hitch pins have been put through the pintles on these
boats. Please try not to lose these pins.

For the Lasers, the hitch pins will stay on the pintles,
which are on the rudder heads (on the Vanguard, the pintle
is on the hull.)  This means it is even more IMPORTANT! than
ever to use the internal pockets in the foil bags to separate
the rudders from the daggerboards (there's one for the
tiller, too).  Otherwise the pointy ends of the hitch pins
may scratch and damage the daggerboards.

Thank you all for your cooperation!

VOLUNTEER E-MAIL LISTS - SIGN UP NOW!
    - New system for ad-hoc/regular volunteer hours

A lot of the work that we do on the club fleets can't be
planned in advance: these tasks are weather-dependent or
unexpected, and must be done right away to keep the club
running smoothly. If you are interested in helping out and
would like to be contacted about impromptu work, sign up for
either the monohull or windsurfing volunteer email lists.

Another option for working off your volunteer hours is
helping out with club facilities. This includes regularly
scheduled work to keep the club ship-shape, such as tidying
the boat yard, club rooms or fix-it room, which can be
easily accomplished in an hour or less before or after a
trip out on the water. If interested, please contact Heather
at facilities@ubcsailing.org.

How to sign up:

ENGLISH BAY SAFETY SEMINAR - SIGN UP NOW!

The English Bay Safety Seminar was developed for users of
the Jericho Sailing Centre to help keep them safe at play on
the waters of English Bay. The seminar covers basic water
safety fundamentals along with user specific information
drawn from the logs of the Jericho Rescue Team who have
intervened in thousands of "sea disasters" over the past 36
years.

Why make your own mistakes when you can learn from the
mistakes of others? Don't challenge Darwin's theory, make
sure your water safety knowledge is the fittest it can be.
Your survival may well depend upon it. Find the missing
links and fill in the gaps in your water safety knowledge by
attending a FREE English Bay Safety Seminar on June 7 & 28.
All times at 7 PM.

RSVP JSCA office.

SAFETY IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY: KNOW YOUR LIMITS, PLAY WITHIN!

UBC Sailing would like to remind all members to put your
safety first when going out on the water. Here are ten
things to consider before going out:

1. Equipment is more likely to break in high winds. How
would you get back to shore if something on your boat broke?

2. Forces on your boat increase with the SQUARE of the wind
speed. This means that 20 knot winds are already already 1.75
times stronger than 15 knot winds while 30 knot winds are a
massive four times stronger than 15 knot winds. Can you and
your boat handle these forces?

3 The waves can be very big (4-6 feet) in westerly winds
while easterly winds are gusty and variable. Can you
anticipate the wind shifts and wave action well enough to
keep the boat upright in the wind gusts?

4. You are responsible for paying for damage and lost parts
that occur due to your own negligence. Sailing in conditions
that exceed your abilities is considered negligent. Moreover,
when a boat is out of commission due to repairs, this greatly
affects your fellow club members and creates a large amount
of work for the many volunteers that keep this club running.

5. Less people are on the water when the wind is strong.
Will anyone know you are in trouble if something happens?

6. Do you have the physical endurance to hike out and keep
the boat upright or to right it repeatedly to get back to
Jericho?

7. The normal procedure for righting a capsized boat won't
work in high winds. Do you know how to do a scoop recovery?
Have you practiced it in lighter winds?

8. Sailing speeds are higher when the wind is strong, making
injuries more likely. (This is particularly true for RS500s,
Hobie 16s, Nacra's and 29ers.) What would you do if you or
your crew were physically injured on the water?

9. Are you prepared to spend extended periods of time
immersed in the water? You and your crew should be wearing a
wetsuit regardless of how warm a day it is.

10. Dinghies generally aren't built to handle winds over 25
knots. Most expert sailors will stay on the beach or go
windsurfing when the wind is that strong. Why not follow
their example?

Further to these questions, it is every member's
responsibility to know and observe the rules on or near the
water. Here are some reminders courtesy of Mike Cotter of JSCA:

1. Always wear your P.F.D. and whistle on the water. Not
only is it the law, but it could save your life!

2. Sail-powered craft have the right of way over power craft,
paddle and rowing powered craft.

3. All non-commercial vessels shall keep well clear of
commercial vessels.

4. It's illegal and extremely dangerous to pass between a
tug and its tow.

5. A port tack sailing vessel shall keep clear of a starboard
tack vessel.

6. A windward vessel shall keep clear of a leeward vessel.

7. A vessel clear astern shall keep clear of a vessel ahead.

8. Any vessel overtaking another shall keep clear.

9. A vessel tacking or gybing shall keep clear of a vessel
on a tack.

10. The area south of the orange can buoys is for training
or transiting only.

11. Swimming or wading on the beach in front of the Centre is
prohibited.

12. It is unsafe to loiter or let children play near the
bottom of launching ramps.

13. Stay well clear of the end of the Jericho Pier as
fishers cast lines as far as possible.

14. Be cautious of pathway traffic when launching/retrieving.

15. Do not leave your craft on the shoreline for extended
periods of time.
