UBC SAILING CLUB PUB NIGHT!
- Friday, Nov. 6, 8 PM @ the Frog n' Firkin
Come down to catch up with old friends and meet some new
ones! This is the first of many exciting activities that
will be going on throughout the fall & winter season. We are
also interested in hearing your thoughts on how to enhance
the community feel of the club, so stop by to let us know what
events you would like or join the social sub-committee to
help see them to fruition!

WINDSURFING WORK PARTY!
- Saturday, Nov. 14, 10 AM - 2 PM
Get some work hours and help put away our windsurfing gear
for the winter! We need about 10 volunteers to help
de-rigging sails, fixing gear, cleaning up the sunset room,
and taking a careful inventory of our equipment. Email
nicholashim@gmail.com to sign up.

MONOHULL DERIGGING / FACILITIES CLEAN-UP PARTY!
- Saturday, Nov. 21, 10 AM - 2 PM
Come out and help us derig the boats in preparation for
winter storms! We'll also inventory the sails, daggerboards,
and rudders to see what needs fixing over the winter when
they're not being used. And we'll tidy up the Sunset and
Club rooms and get everything ship-shape.
This is your last chance to get your work hours in for the
year, so please do come down to volunteer!

The UBC Sailing Club has an official Flickr group! Join and
post your best pictures featuring the sea and sailors @

And in order to put some names to some faces, the UBC
Sailing Club will be profiling some of its members with a
photograph and brief interview. The profile will be framed
and posted in the club room, and featured in the Flickr group
and on the club website. To participate, e-mail the club
photographer Robert Fougere at robfou@gmail.com.

AUTUMN SAFETY TIPS
- Keep safe on the water!
A reminder to place an extra emphasis on boat safety for
yourself and your crew at this time of year. Jericho Rescue
and other boaters are scarce these days so you must take
care to ensure a safe water session. Start with a check of
the weather forecast and tidal activity. Know when the sun
is setting. Don't go farther from shore than you care to
paddle back if you or your equipment should fail or the wind
shut off. Recognize when conditions are beyond your ability
and choose not to launch.
Do a meticulous pre-launch check of your craft and
equipment. Dress properly in
wetsuit/drysuit/hat/booties/gloves + PFD. Tell a friend or
family member where you are going and when you expect to be
back on shore, and follow-up with an après-sailing phone
call.
One final tip: enclose your fully charged cell phone in two
sealed sandwich bags and keep on your person. In the event
of a sea disaster you can't solve yourself, dialing *311
will put you in touch with the Canadian Coast Guard's Rescue
Coordination Centre.
